The Desert substrate heater simulates heated sand beds by the sun in deserts. The amount of hours a day and the strength of the sun in these regions can generate extreme hot surfaces. The substrate is dry and does not increase the air humidity as seen in rainforests or tropical areas. It could have burned my house down and killed my iguana. reptile supply says: *This is obviously a defective unit and should be returned to the place of purchase or to the manufacturer.

Michael S from Illinois says: This is a 25 Watt unit. This info is not in the specifications... Nice to Know though... This unit is being used in a 75 Gallon tank (48"Lx18-3/4"Wx20"H) with 2" to 2-1/2" of Repti-Sand as a substrate. The pad is connected to a Repti-temp rheostat Model #RT-10 set at Medium. It took 2 hours to raise the surface temp. of the sand from 70F to 80F directly over the heating pad. In 10 hours the sand reached 85F directly over the pad. The pad is situated half under a corner water dish (approx: 10"x8") and the sand substrate. The water temp. is holding at 75F (down from initial temp. of 100F). Surrounding sand temeratures from the heating pad are 75F at 3" and 70F at 6". The idea was to heat half of the tank sand to 85F & try to keep the water any temp. above the standard 60F. This product is working very well & with the rheostat set at Med. there is a lot of room for adjustability.
