FAQ:

Q: What is the difference between a rheostat and a thermostat?
A: A rheostat is basically a dimmer. It allows you to manually reduce the amount of power reaching a heater. A thermostat like the 500R senses the temperature and turns the heater on and off accordingly.
Q: Can I use the rheostat/thermostat with a Reptisun, Avian Sun or Power Sun UV?
A: These lamps need specific line voltages; thy cannot be used with dimmers/rheostats.

Product Reviews

Rachel R from Pennsylvania says:
Great product at a very reasonable price. Consistant temps. I use these to control heat mats on both glass tanks and plastic tubs. They work great. Make sure that you have a good digital thermomter or temp gun.

Justyne T from Georgia says:
I purchased one of these a while back and let me just say that it works like a charm: IF you have a nice temp gun. Do not rely on thermometers: they are not as accurate.

I currently have two heat tapes for my two racking systems hooked up to one ReptiTemp and it works great. It keeps the temperature in the enclosures at an ambient of 75 and a back wall heat of 85-90 degrees: just where my boas like it.

I would not recommend this product for a LARGE racking systems, but small racks do great with this. I would recommend it for smaller applications and uses.;)

Caitlin S from New York says:
I was EXTREMELY disappointed in this product. My thermometer is very accurate and this thermostat was very unreliable. After getting it set up, I was trying to maintain a surface temp of 89-92 degrees. With this product the temp would go anywhere from 80-100 degrees, without any tweaking. I was afraid to go to work for fear I would come home to a fried snake. I would not recommend this product to anyone - pay a little more for something a LOT more reliable.

Bryan D from Florida says:
I purchased a couple of these and used them for a while and I must say they work fairly well. I only use them on my backup cages currently anymore because I switched to a proportional thermostat made by Spyder Robotics which will control the power flow and dim your heat sources according to temperature. This product is a simple on/off thermostat. It keeps the temperatures fairly close to where you want them, but say you are using an overhead heat source, it will turn it on and off according to the temperature. If you think about the lighting situation, it could be very stressful to the animal if the light is going on and off. For a little over twenty bucks, this product is the best available in my opinion. For longterm purposes, I don't consider this the best choice. If you are on a budget, this product is great, but if you care about keeping your animals alive for years to come, don't go cheap.

Christine V from Wisconsin says:
I am currently using two Reptitemp 500R one for my Leopard gecko and one for Crested gecko. The Reptitemp 500R was a little difficult to set but it maintains a constant temp in each habitat that it is in. I do have a good thermometer in both habitats that I use to set and monitor the temperature. Before the Reptitemp 500R I had different light bulbs for the day time to maintain the temperature and different light bulbs for at night to maintain temperature. I was continually changing the bulbs and broke a few. By using this method I was having a lot of trouble maintaining a good temperature and I was having a lot of temperature fluctuations in both habitats. When my Leopard gecko came down with pneumonia I need to do something serous and this was it. Now the day light is on a timer and the night bulbs are plugged in to the Reptitemp 500R and my babies habitats maintain a controlled temperature and I do not have to do anything.

Clara F from California says:
im currently using this thermostat for a leo gecko viv. took awhile to get the correct temp set up, but after that i'm very pleased with how this works. very simple, no complications, keeps the temps nice and continuously warm for my little baby leos.

Kevin M from North Carolina says:
I am currently using the reptitemp 500r with an under tank heat pad to control the temp of a ball python cage. So far it has worked perfect. Just remember to use a good thermometer when setting and monitoring the temp.
